Richard grew up on the northern beaches of Sydney, in an entrepreneurial marine industry family. His family owned, developed and operated a boat marina. He and his wife Lucy, owned and operated a consulting firm for 25 years and concurrently co-developed (also over 25 years) a 7 acre garden tourism development on the NSW South Coast, called Merribee, which they sold in 2024.

Richard is an artist and yachtsman and has extensive experience looking after yachts and high-end lifestyle assets.
